My name is Alexander Shames, and I am looking for job to begin a teaching career in China. I will be graduating Wesleyan University in May, 2018 with a degree in Molecular Biology & Biochemistry and a minor in East Asian Studies. My experience as an educator is broad, including jobs as a 1-on-1 tutor for high school students in chemistry, math, and general school and study tips; serving as a Teaching Assistant for undergraduate mathematics and biology courses; interning at the MIT Museum, an educational science museum affiliated with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology; and coordinating Wesleyan Science Outreach, a student group that travels five days a week to public elementary schools to perform science experiments with children.
My educational background is in the biological and chemical sciences, though I have taken courses in psychology, queer theory, mathematics, music, art history, computer science, and philosophy. I have also worked as an Undergraduate Researcher in an on-campus molecular biology laboratory, and have been awarded two Summer Research Grants for original research. This upcoming year I will be writing an Honors Thesis based on my 2+ years of laboratory work.
Last Spring, I spent three and a half months studying Chinese Language at Capital Normal University (首都师范大å¦) in Beijing. In accordance with the program’s language pledge, I spoke only Mandarin for the duration of my stay. I am near fluent in conversational Chinese and proficient in reading and writing as well.
After I graduate, I hope to return to China for a teaching job. I love being an educator, forming relationships with students, and helping people enjoy learning. In my spare time I like reading, meeting new people, and cooking with friends. Please contact me with any opportunities!
