I am A Chinese American Actor in Los Angeles, who plans to go to China in 2009 to teach English and study Chinese and film making at the Beijing Film Academy. I am currently tutoring at the Glendale Community College, working in network television, and planning a documentary on my travels to China. I hope to arrive in Beijing in April, and live in Beijing for at least 2 years.
My goal is to gain enough fluency in Mandarin, to hopefully become an administrator in a English language training center. I am extremely excited to work with my Chinese students, and learn about Chinese culture through a fluid language exchange between teacher and student. I feel that acquiring language skills is very much like being an actor learning his lines. One must go beyond a superficial knowledge of the words. Teaching English means getting to students to internalize the flow of the oral spoken, so they feel confident to speak in public, as if the words reflect their thought and feelings.
I feel it is my job to inspire the students to speak English, to teach them in a way that they want to and desire to practice speaking English. In this way, they not only develop language skills, they subconsciously are developing "people skills". For half of my job is letting them discover within themselves a desire to speak English. When they leave my classes, they leave with a strong vocabulary, a rhythmic sense of the language, and the motivation to continue studying English.
